Radiobiological effects of low-level radiation and cancer risks

چکیده
by R. Mukherjee and J. Mircheva H, I ealth risks from exposure to low levels of ionizing radiation, particularly those relating to cancer, invariably command considerable attention. Recent reports about radon levels in homes and buildings, the extensive fallout from the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear plant accident, and suspected cancer clusters around nuclear facilities have contributed to a heightened sense of concern. Read from the popular press, such reports can create unnecessary fears and the distorted perception that radiation is somehow the sole, or dominant, cancer-causing agent in our environment. This is far from the case. Unfortunately, such perceptions are not easily corrected. Although a virtual encyclopedia of scientific information is available about low-level radiation and health effects, most of it is published in specialized literature not easily accessible to the general public. This scientific background includes basic concepts and studies that may help to place the issue of radiation and cancer risk into clearer perspective. This article briefly reviews some important points.

The biological effects induced by high-charged and energy particles and its application in cancer therapy
The radiobiological effects of high atomic number and energy (HZE particles) ion beams are of interest for radioprotection in space and tumor radiotherapy. Space radiation mainly consists of heavy charged particles from protons to iron ions, which is distinct from common terrestrial forms of radiation. HZE particles pose a significant cancer risk to astronauts on prolonged space missions. With ...
متن کاملExtrapolating radiation-induced cancer risks from low doses to very low doses.
There is strong evidence that ionizing radiation increases cancer risks at high doses (e.g., >or=1 Gy), and persuasive, if controversial, epidemiological evidence that cancer risks are increased at low doses ( approximately 10 mGy). Discussed here are the issues related to extrapolating radiation risks from low radiation doses to very low doses (<or=1 mGy) - for which purpose we are forced to r...

متن کاملEstimating the Radiation-Induced Cancer Risks in Pediatric Computed Tomography
Introduction One of the central questions in radiological protection is the magnitude of the risks from low doses of radiation, related to the justification and optimization of the diagnostic medical exposures. Therefore, the aim of this study was to estimate the cancer incidence and mortality risks in children of different ages, sizes, and ethnicities undergoing computed tomography examination...

Purpose: In the current study, using different radiobiological models, tumor control probability (TCP) and normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) of radiotherapy plans were calculated for three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) of prostate cancer. Methods and Materials: 10 prostate plans were randomly selected among patients ...
